Tonight's Principal Speaker

Coach Al Martin

Few names carry more weight in Southern Illinois athletics than Al Martin.
A Du Quoin native, Martin grew up in the heart of the community he would one day define. Spending his youth playing pickup games and sandlot football on the corner of East Park and Peach Street, a vacant lot that became the birthplace of local legend.

Martin stepped into the head coaching role at Du Quoin High School and wasted no time making his mark, finishing his first season as head coach with a perfect 14–0 record and the long-awaited state title. What followed was one of the most remarkable runs in Illinois high school football history. His program achieved 23 straight playoff appearances, two state championships: in 1988–89 and 1992–93. Two perfect seasons, and a career record of 254–66.

Over the course of his tenure, Martin led the Indians to six appearances in the state championship game The Southern, a level of sustained excellence that few coaches at any level ever achieve. He is widely regarded as one of the most dominant football coaches in Southern Illinois history.

Beyond the wins and trophies, Coach Martin built something harder to measure; a culture of discipline, pride, and commitment that shaped generations of young men in Du Quoin. He retired from teaching in 2014, staying on as head coach through that final season to ensure the program was left in good hands Harrisburg Register, a reflection of the care and intentionality that defined his entire career.

A Hall of Fame coach and a true son of Southern Illinois, Coach Al Martin's story is one of roots, grit, and the enduring power of a community that shows up for its kids, which makes him a perfect fit for a night like this.

The David Eaton Fund

This fund was established in 2020 after David passed away. He was a long time Elk and volunteer manager for Du Quoin High School Athletics for many years. We have initiated fundraising efforts in David's name to assist Du Quoin Athletics in his memory.
If you would like to donate, please see a committee member.

The Darrell Keith Anders Memorial Scholarship

The Darrell Keith Anders Scholarship is in honor of the spirit of Darrell Anders, his beliefs, values, qualities of character, and standards of conduct that set him apart from other athletes. In addition, this scholarship is in honor of his commitment to being a positive role model for the youth of Du Quoin.

SENIOR BASEBALL ATHLETE

The Virgil Ashton Smith Memorial Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship is in memory of Ashton Smith, a 2018 graduate of Du Quoin High School. The scholarship was established by his family and friends in 2023. Ashton played varsity baseball all 4 years of high school. He then went on to play 5 more years at the collegiate level, while finishing his baseball career with the Thrill-ville Thrillbillies on July 2l, 2023. It is the desire of his family that this scholarship be given to a senior baseball athlete maintaining a G.P.A of 2.5 or higher in their high school coursework. The scholarship recipient shall exemplify Ashton's characteristics of competi-tiveness, strong work ethic, can-do attitude, resiliency, and simple love for his teammates and the game, just as Ashton did.

Fred Huff

Sixty-three ago, June 3, 1960, Jerry Sloan shared his basketball prowess on the Du Quoin State Fair grandstand stage -- just a couple football fields from tonight’s Du Quoin Elks Boy’s All-Sports Banquet.

Southern Illinois’ 17 Elks lodges were raising money to combat cerebral palsy and staged an exhibition between South Seven Conference stars and players from other area high schools. Attendance was 2,200.

Sloan, who had just graduated from McLensboro High School, was working in the Hamilton County oil fields that summer and after arriving at Du Quoin said, “Mr. Huff, I hurt my back at work today and don’t know if I can play.”

Mr. Huff told him just to jump center and they’d get him out quickly. He played nearly the entire game and scored a game-high 16 points.

Ed Macauley, coach of the St. Louis Hawks, and Harry Gallatin, SIU coach and future New York Knick head coach, were the coaches.
At the time Mr. Huff was in his fourth year serving on the Elks banquet committee.

Coordinating the all-star game on behalf of Southern Illinois Elks was a precursor of what was ahead for him. Fred A. Huff, 94, writer, historian and promoter of Southern Illinois athletics and entertainment, died March 18. Among the thousands of events Mr. Huff promoted over the decades, the Elks Boys All-Sports Banquet was particularly significant.

He was an active committee member for 66 years and took pride in presenting nationally-known speakers to Du Quoin and its prep athletes. For over 35 years, Mr. Huff distinguished Southern Illinois University and its Salukis as one of the nation’s most recognized athletic programs. His tenure as sports information director spanned 1960-1971 and 1983-2001, while also serving as assistant director of athletics 1977-1986.

During SIU’s golden sports era of the 1960s, the Salukis won 10 national championships, in addition to the 1967 National Invitation Tournament. Also during the decade, SIU hosted four NCAA national championships. Mr. Huff was honored with induction into six halls of fame: St. Louis Sports in 2017; Du Quoin High School Athletics in 2015; College Sports Information Directors of America in 2012; Missouri Valley Conference in 2010; Saluki Athletics in 2000; and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association in 1995.

In 1971, Mr. Huff was named publicity director of the Du Quoin State Fair; and in 1972, assumed overall management of Hayes Fair Acres and the Fair’s annual exposition and celebrity showcase.
His promotion of harness racing’s premier event, the Hambletonian, enhanced not only the trotting classic but earned Du Quoin national stature from 1957 through 1980.

Born in Danville, Ill., in 1929, and a Du Quoin resident since 1931, Mr. Huff held a lifelong dedication to the city, where he met and later married Ann Gaerig in 1950. She predeceased him in December 2022.

Hometown pride led to leadership of various programs, including Du Quoin’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2003, with his newspaper features about the town’s unsung residents; perpetuation of the Elks annual high school All-Sports Banquet; and the Du Quoin Chamber of Commerce.

As a result, he was recognized as the 2003 Du Quoin Citizen of the Year, and in 2011, the Du Quoin District 300 Educational Foundation Outstanding Community Citizen Award.

Mr. Huff’s published works include: Saluki Sports History: 100 Years of Facts & Highlights; The Hambletonian – 1926-1975; The History of the Du Quoin State Fair (1923-2002); Du Quoin High School Football History (1928-2009).

As reported in a rare personal interview, “Fred Huff was a man with many stories to tell and to write about.”

The William G. Theobald Memorial Award

The William G. Theolbald award is one of the most prestigious honors of the Elks Banquet in that it is named after the person who will always be remembered as being the most instrumental in developing the Elks All-Sports Banquet.
